ABOUT HOODOO

Inspiring Unity in Our Community

Established 2019, HOODOO Mural Festival has inspired unity in the community through public art, urban beautification, and creativity by way of a bike-able, walk-able outdoor art gallery in downtown Amarillo. The event is produced with privately raised funds and during the 2019 inaugural festival five walls were painted by not only local artist but artists from around the country.

HOODOO Mural Festival will hold its second festival on October 2nd, taking place on Polk Street between blocks 5th & 6th. The event will celebrate the completion of a week of artists painting five more walls in downtown Amarillo with a music festival, live painting, art demonstrations, educational features and food trucks.

Music

Washed Out

Washed Out is Atlanta-based producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ernest Greene. Over the course of four uniquely enchanting, critically-lauded albums and an EP, the music he makes has proved both transportive and visual, each new effort inviting listeners into immersive, self-contained universes.

Life of Leisure, the first Washed Out EP, set the bar for the Chillwave-era, shimmering in a warm haze of off-the-cuff Polaroids pre-IG filters. Within and Without, his full-length debut on Sub Pop, found Washed Out's sound morphing into nocturnal, icy synth-pop and embraced provocative imagery. Paracosm is Greene's take on psychedelia, with a full live band and kaleidoscopic light show, and saw him playing to the largest audiences of his career. The sample-heavy Mister Mellow delivered a 360 audio/visual experience, with cut-n-paste and hand-drawn animation to match the hip hop influences throughout the album.

With each release, Greene has approached his evolving project with meticulous detail and a steadfast vision. With Purple Noon, his fourth album, and return to Sub Pop, he delivers the most accessible Washed Out creation to date.

Nané

Nané is a high-energy six-piece outfit from Austin, TX who caught the attention of Brittany Howard in June 2020 with their “Blue Velvet” music video. Howard selected them as one of her five picks for this year’s NPR Tiny Desk Contest, commenting on the groove while giving major props to lead singer Daniel Sahad who she applauded for his “no holds barred” performance. Sahad hails from the Dominican Republic. His grandparents are respectively Black, White, Latino and Arab (Lebanese). An offspring of globalism, Daniel comes from a lineage of courageous individuals who broke barriers to pursue their dreams. Called Nané as a term of endearment by his family in the Dominican Republic, Sahad determined the band’s name with a communal approach in mind –when you call him Nané, you’re family too. Nané (the band) came together in 2016 at The University of Texas at Austin where Daniel and guitarist, Ian Green, would drink and play cover songs for their friends. The pair quickly realized their potential to write originalmusic together. The boys added bass player Scott McIntyre to the lineup and began writing their debut album while performing with Dayglow drummer, Brady Knippa, and Black Pumas keyboardist, JaRon Marshall. Nané rose quickly on the Austin music scene, playing a series of sold-out shows in front of the shimmering curtains of Stay Gold

VAMPING

Vamping began the solo project of guitarist and singer Broderick Adams in El Paso, TX. The desert flora inspired the first project by the band in 2017 entitled “Desert Plants” that explored Broderick’s thoughts while navigating a life-changing move from the panhandle of Texas. The debut album was released on Melotron Recordings based out of Thessaloniki, Greece on cassette. Broderick went on to release one more EP as a solo artist “Caves and Hoodoos” in 2018 on Melotron Recordings before putting a live band together for performance. The spectrum of Vamping shifts from a modern interpretation of the surf sound that swept the Pacific coast to new wave. The music consistently features reverberated guitars, echoed vocals, classic surf beats, vintage synth sounds, and dreamy soundscapes. The band plans to announce a large physical release in the US in late 2021.

Merritt is now known worldwide for his romanticized, renaissance-inspired murals and oil paintings.
